This is for Kirk.
Every day I wake up and read as much about what’s going on in the world as I can before I shuffle off to work, to bang my head on some movie that is most likely going to suck and exists only to make obscene amounts of money. Regardless, I start my day off knowing there’s always a balance between shitty things and good things. It seems recently that shitty:good is like, 5:1 currently….this only confirms it.

topherchris: One week ago, a school board in Missouri voted 4-0 to ban two books, one of them Vonnegut’s Slaughterhouse-Five. The vote came in response to a complaint lodged by a resident who homeschools his children.
This is one of the most depressing things I’ve heard from the lit world in a while. I can’t get over it.
This story had a physical effect on me I got so mad. It isn’t hyperbole to say Slaughterhouse Five helped change my life. It opened my mind to a lot of different and intelligent views.
It really hits home because the only exposure I had to the book was a class (an elective) I took in college that included it as part of the curriculum: my high school did not, not even in Honors or AP English (both of which I took).
For what it’s worth, the Vonnegut Memorial Library is giving copies of Slaughterhouse-Five to the students at Republic High School, if they are interested in reading what the “Responsible Adults” have deemed as too obscene for them - which they hopefully are. Make your donations here: http://www.vonnegutlibrary.org/.
